A small amount of the ointment about the size of a match head is to be placed on the little finger and applied to the inside of one nostril and repeated it for other nostril. Then the nostrils are closed by pressing the sides of the nose together; this will spread the ointment around the nostrils. A cotton bud may be used instead of the little finger for the applications in particular patients who are very ill.
Nasal Eradication of nasal colonisation with methicillin-resistant Staphylococci aureus Adult: As 2% nasal oint: Apply into each nostril 2-3 times daily for a max of 5 days. After application, press sides of nose together and gently massage to spread the oint through the insides of the nostrils for approx 1 min.
Child: >12 yr As 2% nasal oint: Apply into each nostril 2-3 times daily for a max of 5 days. After application, press sides of nose together and gently massage to spread the oint through the insides of the nostrils for approx 1 min.
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Muppirocin or any of the excipients.
It inhibits bacterial protein sysnthesis by reversibly and specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetase. It is bactericidal at concentration achieved by tiopical intranasal administration.
It can cause severe skin reactions or allergies. Thrush (a yeast infection) may develop if it is used for a long time. It should be kept away from eyes.
The most frequent side effects observed are headache, rhinitis, respiratory disorders, pharyngitis, taste perversion, burning/stinging, cough & pruritis.
Pregnacy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Mupirocin nasal ointment (contains equivalent of 2% Mupirocin free acid) in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Lactation: it is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Mupirocin nasal ointment is administered to a nursing women.
